The most creative and ultimately beautiful scene (in my opinion) in Ken Russell's 1980 film Altered States. The scene is fairly dark (visually) and there's enough detail that needs to be seen clearly in the latter half of the scene that you should really click the "watch in high quality" link below the vid window to appreciate it fully (thanks to the folks @ Youtube for that!).
